A Story of Fire – Book Review

A Story of Fire is about a quest of a young girl, Larissa, accompanied by a magical friend, who takes off in search of the fire her town needs to survive. The sorceress who has always provided the fire is missing from her castle as reported by the messenger bird. Larissa takes on the responsibility to solve this problem and in doing so, learns to try new things, eat new foods, confront unknown magic, and succeed against previously unrevealed challenges. She learns many things about herself along the way. The language is so visually vivid that blank pages are provided throughout for the reader to draw what is described, having an interactive experience beyond merely reading the story.

Chapter 1 A Journey Starts
Once upon a time in a land far away there was a good sorceress with magical powers. She
could make fire come alive to warm people up, or heat food, or make light in the dark, or
melt snow and ice. She lived high on a mountain and when people needed her help, they
sent a special bird to fly up and call her down.
One day, the bird flew to her castle but it was empty!! The bird flew down and told the
townspeople. There was much concern about what to do, but a brave girl volunteered to go
find her. She packed her backpack with warm clothes, some bread, some meat and some
water and set out to find the sorceress.
She had not gotten very far when she faced a stream with gushing water racing past. She
couldn't tell how deep it was. She sat on a rock to try to decide what to do. She wondered
out loud, “Is there magic on this mountain that could help me?” Suddenly a tiny fairy
floated up from the water into the air in front of her. When she spoke her voice sounded
like tinkling bells. “We can help you, brave girl, but you must close your eyes and say "I
believe in fairies" three times." She closed her eyes and said the phrase three times. She
felt a slight wind through her hair and as if she were floating. When her feet touched
ground, she opened her eyes and found she was much farther away from the water than
she thought. A soft voice tinkled in her ear. "You are safe, but be careful as you go. If you
encounter danger, you can call us the same way you did to have us get you here. Good
luck!!
