Why the Multiplication Table Still Matters in the Age of Calculators

Every few years, someone argues that memorizing times tables is a waste of effort. Everyone carries a calculator now, the reasoning goes, so why drill children on something a phone does instantly? It sounds sensible — and it’s wrong, for reasons that have less to do with arithmetic than with how learning actually works.

Fluency frees up the mind for harder things

Cognitive scientists talk about “working memory” — the small mental workspace where we hold and manipulate information. It’s strictly limited. If a student has to stop and compute 7 × 8 from scratch every time it appears, that calculation eats up the very workspace they need for the bigger problem in front of them.

When the times tables are automatic — retrieved instantly, like knowing that a word is spelled correctly — that workspace stays free for the actual thinking: setting up the equation, spotting the pattern, understanding the concept. This is why fluency with basic facts consistently predicts success in later, more advanced math. It isn’t about the multiplication itself; it’s about what the freed-up attention lets you do next.

The table is a map of patterns, not a list to memorize

There’s also a deeper reason the multiplication table matters, and it’s the part rote drilling often misses. Laid out as a grid, the table is really a map of numerical patterns:

  • The diagonal traces the square numbers — 1, 4, 9, 16, 25.
  • The nines column hides a neat trick: the digits of each answer always add up to nine.
  • The whole grid is symmetric, a visual proof that 6 × 7 and 7 × 6 are the same.
  • The fives march in a steady, predictable rhythm that’s easy to internalize.

A child who sees these patterns isn’t memorizing 144 disconnected facts — they’re learning how numbers relate to each other. That structural understanding is what transfers to fractions, ratios, and algebra later on. A good multiplication chart is valuable precisely because it makes those patterns visible at a glance, instead of hiding them inside a calculator.

Practice works best in short, frequent bursts

The old model of long, dreary drill sessions is also the least effective way to build fluency. Memory research is clear that short, spaced repetition beats marathon cramming: five focused minutes a day, several days a week, cements facts far better than an hour once a week.

That’s also why quick, game-like practice tends to work so well for this material. Turning the tables into a fast, low-pressure challenge keeps sessions short, makes the repetition painless, and gives the immediate feedback that helps facts stick.

Not obsolete — foundational

The calculator argument gets the relationship backwards. Times tables were never really about producing answers; a machine can do that. They’re about building the fluent number sense that everything more advanced is constructed on top of. Skipping them to lean on a calculator is like handing someone a spell-checker instead of teaching them to read.

In an age of instant computation, the goal isn’t to compute faster than a machine. It’s to free the mind to do the things a machine can’t — and a solid grasp of the multiplication table is still one of the best first steps toward that.
