THE MONEY MINDSET
Myths and Realities About Wealth, Happiness, and Status
In the UK, as in many other societies, there is a longstanding belief that owning property and earning a high salary are clear signs of success. However, real financial well-being extends far beyond a payslip or postcode. Despite what advertising and even government policy might imply, research increasingly shows that once our basic needs for food, housing, health, and security are met, the link between money and happiness quickly diminishes. The idea that ‘money buys happiness’ is more myth than fact; happiness tends to level off once incomes cover essential living costs and allow for modest comforts. Focusing solely on prestige or accumulation often leads to “hedonic adaptation”, where an increase in income brings progressively less satisfaction over time.
