The Pinglish Project

Pinglish is a phonetic spelling system that bridges the gap between spoken and written English. Instead of relying on traditional spelling rules — which are often inconsistent and confusing — Pinglish listens first, then writes. It captures how words sound, making English more intuitive and accessible for learners, readers, and speakers of all backgrounds.
🌟 Why Pinglish Matters
  • Phonetic clarity: Words are spelled the way they’re pronounced, reducing confusion and improving reading fluency.
  • Manual precision: Every word in Pinglish is carefully heard, interpreted, and rewritten — it’s artisanal language work.
  • Unreplicable intuition: No algorithm can match the human ear’s ability to detect subtle sound shifts, especially in accents or idioms.
  • Cultural awareness: Pinglish preserves tone, meaning, and readability — not just sounds.
  • Educational power: The dual-column format (Pinglish + standard English) makes it ideal for teaching pronunciation, reading, and listening skills.
🧠 Pinglish as Linguistic Innovation
Pinglish isn’t just a spelling reform — it’s a human-centered phonetic system. It respects the way people actually speak and hear English. By aligning sound with symbol, it empowers learners and celebrates the richness of spoken language.
Before looking at our stories that are already rewritten into Pinglish please familiarise yourself with the sounds you need to know by watching our alphabet videos available on freekidsbooks.org and thepinglishproject.com.

Pinglish makes it very easy for English second-language speakers to pronounce words.

Pinglish is English only the spelling is different.

Pinglish is a possible solution to the current way we spell. It is so simple because using English letters each of which has only 1 sound all words can easily translated into Pinglish.

Once the 41 sounds are learnt the reader will be able to read anything written in Pinglish without further assistance. It is a very intuitive language and can be learned with ease.
